Houston Immigration Attorney Helps Graduates Stay in Country to Grow Economy
Nov 4, 2011
Houston, TX (Law Firm Newswire) November 3, 2011 – NASDAQ CEO Robert Griefeld testified before the U.S. Senate this summer about how bureaucratic red tape prevents many of tomorrow’s entrepreneurs from starting their companies in the United States.
“Many of Texas’ technology companies need the talent that too often leaves the country after graduation,” said Houston immigration attorney Annie Banerjee.
Griefeld told the Judiciary Committee that Congress’ failure to reform the legal immigration laws is hurting the American economy at a time when the country can least afford it.
Thousands of doctoral and masters students graduate and leave the country every year and start companies elsewhere because the current system puts too many obstacles in their way, Griefeld told Congress. The companies started by those graduates could be and ought to be started in the United States, he argued.
The challenges of staying in the United States after graduate school are just as tough in Texas where Banerjee said the state’s economy should be buoyed by many of the students leaving school.
“A reform of these laws would show tangible job growth in Texas,” she said. “Our firm works to keep talented graduates in the country so they can work and help create jobs.”
Griefeld cited research contradicting the notion that hiring H-1B workers takes jobs from American graduates. Technology companies in the United States increase their workforce by five workers for every H-1B worker they request, he said.
Banerjee said students and the companies trying to hire them and keep them in the country still have resources to keep this kind of brain drain from continuing to hurt Texas’ economy. An immigrant herself who runs a successful company, Banerjee said her firm is experienced in helping graduates and businesses understand and maneuver through tricky immigration matters.
