Austin Personal Injury Lawyer Details Case of Drunk Drug Dealer Driving and Killing a Woman
Mar 29, 2012
Austin, TX (Law Firm Newswire) March 28, 2012 – The man in this story was a long time user of booze. He chose it again one fateful night and killed an innocent woman.
“The man in this disquieting case had a long and troubled relationship with the bottle, and a record of drunk driving convictions. That didn’t make any difference to him. He still drove completely tanked whenever he wanted. Driving under the influence had not caught up to him in the form of anything other than drunk driving arrests; a laughable matter best left for regaling drunken friends,” remarked Robert W. Lee, an Austin personal injury attorney of The Lee Law Firm in Austin, Texas.
Recently, this perennial drunk sailed through a red light in his Porsche Cayenne and slammed into another vehicle, killing a 21-year-old woman; the light of her family’s life. The impact was so horrendous, her car was caved inwards and debris was scattered all over the intersection. The car was crushed to about half its usual size. Emergency crews had seen bad accidents before, but this one was awful. The young woman was ejected from her car. She never stood a chance of survival, and was pronounced dead at the scene of the carnage.
Police charged the man with drunken driving, vehicular homicide, disobeying a red light, failure to remain at the scene, driving with a revoked license and failure to give aid. “The license had been yanked for drunk driving priors,” Lee remarked. There was no doubt in anyone’s mind that this accident was preventable, but for the choice the man made to drive while under the influence. His preference for boozing and driving left the 21-year-old woman without any choices, other than death.
The Porsche driver and his passenger fled the scene on foot and a K-9 tracking dog found him just a short distance from the wreck, too drunk to realize where he was. “On checking for a criminal record, the police discovered he had priors for underage drinking, driving while suspended, drug dealing, receiving stolen property, theft, drug possession and disorderly conduct. All in all, a real upstanding citizen,” said Lee.
Not all accidents caused by drunk drivers are this horrific, but they most certainly can be. Those who choose to drink and drive are literally accidents looking for a place to happen, and that is usually what happens. Someone may be seriously injured and live, losing what they once had for a life, or they may die at the scene. Accidents like this need to be discussed with a competent injury lawyer. Without assistance, an accident victim will not get a fair deal from insurance companies.
“Don’t wait too long to call a qualified lawyer. There is a statute of limitations running, and if you miss filing a lawsuit for compensation before the deadline, there is no other recourse,” Lee explained. “It’s my job to help you if you have been in an accident with a truck. If you need help, I am here to answer your questions.”
