Spring Break Binge Drinking Can Create Dangerous Drivers Notes Chicago Accident Attorney
Mar 6, 2012
Chicago, IL (Law Firm Newswire) March 5, 2012 – As spring break approaches for students at colleges and high schools across the country, health care groups and highway safety organizations warn to keep an eye out for drivers who may have had too much to drink.
Alcohol abuse and binge drinking cause about 80,000 deaths a year in the United States. Many of those deaths happen on the highways and many others are injured because of careless drinking habits and poor judgment.
“So many people are injured on the roads as a result of driving while intoxicated,” said Chicago accident attorney Robert Briskman. “We see many clients who are injured in highway crashes because of someone else’s carelessness.”
Binge drinking has been a staple of spring break partying for years. There are a number of health and social problems that can arise because of alcohol abuse, from liver disease and heart disease to DUIs and domestic violence, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control.
The unintended consequences of being hurt in an auto accident because of someone else’s alcohol abuse include health care costs, long rehabilitation and lost work, Briskman said.
Alcohol abuse is the third largest preventable cause of death, according to the CDC. Young people are disproportionately more likely to be injured or killed in alcohol related incidents during spring break.
“Drunk driving accidents around spring break claim too many lives and injure too many young people every year,” Briskman said. “We urge students heading out to spring break to be careful and responsible on the roads. Designate a driver or simply stay off the roads altogether when you are celebrating.”
