Wrongful Death the Result of Hazing Indicates Litigation Funding Corporation
Mar 13, 2012
Southfield, MI (Law Firm Newswire) March 12, 2012 – Going to a university and surviving is becoming a major issue. There is something dreadfully wrong with hazing rituals.
“You send your kids to a university, hoping they get a good education to go out and face the world. You don’t expect them to die in a hazing ritual. That is what happened in this case, and the sad thing is, it did not need to happen. Ultimately, the owner of the bus in which the young man died will also be sued for wrongful death. Others involved in the suit will be those who hazed the 26-year-old to death,” outlined Darren Monroe of Litigation Funding Corporation of Michigan.
More often than not, hazing rituals on a university campus take place in buildings right on campus. This case was different, in that it happened on a bus. The Champions were proud of their son, Robert Champion Jr. and his accomplishments. He was a member of Florida A&M’s band. The band was at a football game performing and once the members had returned to their hotel rooms, it was expected they would stay there until the morning. That did not happen in this instance.
Instead, the band members got back on their Fabulous Coach Lines bus to haze and harass anyone wanting to be inducted into their group. Champion somehow wound up dead. He was an easy target, as he was in line for chief drum major, was vocal about opposing the band’s hazing culture and a homosexual. His autopsy results clearly indicated his death was a homicide. It tore his family apart. They had no idea why he was on the bus as it was well known what they used it for. The police feel he may have been trying to stop a hazing and things got out of hand.
In talks with a personal injury lawyer, the family decided to file a wrongful death lawsuit in which they state the bus company was negligent in allowing students to get back on board their bus after hours. The company said it did everything it could within their power to remedy the situation once they knew about the issue.
“The family would be faced with bills relating to their son’s death, not the least of which would be trying to transport him back home from where he died. They would also still need to pay their usual monthly expenses. This kind of money does not grow on trees. The way to deal with it would be to call a lawsuit loan company and find out about litigation funding,” suggested Monroe.
Pre-settlement funding is an emergency lawsuit loan to help a plaintiff get back on their feet financially and be able to pay all their bills. “There is money in reserve to carry them through while they wait for their case to be resolved. Lawsuit loans are easy to apply for, and you must have a lawyer working on your behalf before you fill out an application form,” Monroe explained.
