Brunswick Auto Accident Lawyer Calls For Tighter Controls at Georgia Highway Patrol
May 5, 2012
Brunswick, GA (Law Firm Newswire) May 4, 2012 – An investigation into Georgia Highway Patrol wrecks showed that troopers were at fault in 99 automobile crashes involving their cruisers across the Peach State from January of 2011 to March of 2012.
Some of the at-fault troopers were in multiple crashes and one trooper killed a woman on New Year’s Eve when his cruiser slammed into her SUV in downtown Atlanta.
“The hard work done by the Georgia Highway Patrol probably prevents a great number of accidents from happening on our roadways, but there is no excuse for this many Trooper-caused accidents on the road,” said Brunswick auto accident attorney Nathan Williams. “When those lights go on, the highways can suddenly become a race track and Troopers need to be respectful of how dangerous chases can be.”
The investigation by WSB in Atlanta revealed that a Trooper involved in the fatal crash on New Year’s Eve that killed Kathy Porter had been involved in a similar crash earlier that year. The fatal wreck happened when the Trooper, Donald Crozier, ran a red light on his way to a police chase, according to WSB. The New Year’s Eve accident was the sixth at-fault accident for Crozier since 2008, according to Georgia Highway Patrol records.
“Public safety has to be the No. 1 priority of those who patrol our streets and highways,” Williams said. “The management at the top of the Georgia Highway Patrol needs to absorb the information in this report and make the necessary changes to train the Troopers to drive safely. Management also need to have the bravery to remove Troopers who are not driving responsibly and could be a danger on the road.”
State Troopers already get four times more driving training than police officers, according to the report. The chief driving instructor for the Georgia Department of Public Safety told the television station that the most dangerous thing the Highway Patrol does is the thing it does the most – drive the cruiser.
