Woman Loses Baby in Car Accident
Jun 30, 2012
Waxahachie, TX (Law Firm Newswire) June 29, 2012 – A pregnant woman driving in Houston hit a Ford F-450 wrecker truck with her Chevy Malibu on the Gulf Freeway feeder road.
The woman was seventeen weeks pregnant and was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital – Texas Medical Center with injuries that did not threaten her life. The baby, however, did not survive.
The woman in the Chevy Malibu allegedly drove through a red light before the impact with the wrecker truck. The accident is under investigation, but it is believed alcohol may have played a role in the woman’s crashing into the truck, explained Houston Police Department spokesman Kese Smith.
Texas is a national leader in DWI accidents and annual deaths. Nearly 2,000 people in the state die each year from accidents involving driving while intoxicated.
For the first DWI offense, the penalty is up to a $2,000 fine and 180 days in jail. For the second the maximum penalties are a $4,000 fine and one year in jail. The third offense can bring a $10,000 fine and a ten year sentence.
Most people appreciate how dangerous drinking and driving is, and they are aware many fatalities occur each year because of it. These fatalities and injuries produce a very strong ripple effect. When one person is killed in an accident, an entire family is affected. Similarly, the victim’s co-workers, friends and peers in communities such as a church are also impacted.
The loss of an unborn baby in a car accident involving allegations of alcohol abuse is particularly tragic.
“These kinds of situations can be very emotionally charged and confusing for everyone involved,” said Texas personal injury attorney John Hale. “It is important to know the legal framework and nuances for them, in order to make good decisions in the midst of chaos.”
