Scholarship Created for Florida Brain Injury Healthcare Providers
Jul 19, 2012
Tampa, FL (Law Firm Newswire) July 18, 2012 – The Toral Family Foundation is offering a scholarship program for members of the healthcare field who want to learn more about brain injuries to enhance their competence in treating them.
The Florida foundation is offering three professionals paid trips to the 10th Annual North American Brain Injury Society Medical Conference on Sept. 12-15 in Miami. Each scholarship is valued at $1,500 and includes entry to the conference.
Applicants to the scholarship program must be employed in the healthcare field within the state of Florida, and work in the brain injury field. August 3, 2012 is the application deadline.
“This is a very generous way of contributing to the improved treatment of those who sustain brain trauma injuries,” said Tampa traumatic brain injury attorney Robert T. Joyce.
The Toral Family Foundation is dedicated to improving the lives of people living with traumatic brain injuries and their family members. Research, education and community support are the main ways they address the medical condition. The foundation has entered into a partnership with the University of Florida, College of Medicine to support a professorship focused on traumatic brain injuries.
Brain injuries have been receiving more press lately and generally there is more awareness due to media attention to situations like the suicides of NFL players Junior Seau and Dave Duerson. Duerson’s condition was related to brain trauma sustained during his time in the NFL, but so far there has not been the same link made in Seau’s case. Even so, the attention to the case has raised the possibility of such link in the public’s consciousness and conscience.
There could be as many as 5.3 million Americans living in some state of disability due to brain injuries, but neuroscience is still an emerging field, meaning there is much for researchers to learn and share with the public. Hopefully, there may come a day when there are far fewer such life-altering injuries.
