Tampa Social Security Lawyer Warns of Potential Upcoming Social Security Benefit Restrictions

Tampa, FL (Law Firm Newswire) August 20, 2012 – Beneficiaries of the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program will see a reduction in their benefit checks by an estimated 21 percent within the next four years.
According to The 2012 Annual Report of the Board of Trustees of the Federal Old-Age and Survivors Insurance and Federal Disability Insurance Trust Funds, burgeoning disability claims are slated to exhaust the fund by 2016.
“Though some SSDI costs will be covered by money previously earmarked for other benefits, SSDI recipients are being advised that they will most likely be facing across-the-board benefit reductions,” indicated Tampa social security attorney, David W. Magann.
Factors contributing to the overburdened program include the extended sluggishness of the U.S. economy, across-the-board wage stagnation due to high energy prices and a significant increase in the number of SSDI claimants drawing from the fund due, in large part, to the expiration of unemployment benefits, as well as an overall broadening of the definition of what qualifies as a “disability,” including physical and mental health issues.
As the system reaches maximum capacity, new claimants, as well as existing beneficiaries, are being cautioned that they almost certainly will face payout decreases, and other issues when it comes to receiving their benefits.
“People looking for much-needed assistance from social security or supplemental security income are facing a long, sometimes arduous process,” Magann added. “Don’t attempt to navigate the system yourself or with someone not specifically trained and knowledgeable when it comes to social security and disability.”
The application process to request social security and supplemental security income (SSI) typically includes filing forms, conducting interviews and attending doctor’s appointments and follow-up hearings.
“We are looking at a fairly complex system, one in which claim errors happen frequently when navigated by a novice, now facing cuts, probable overhaul by Congress and juggling a continued increase in claimants,” explained Magann. “It has never been more important to have an attorney who knows the process and is capable and determined to get you the benefits to which you are entitled.”
