Texas Man Texts About Need to Quit Texting Right Before Accident
Aug 24, 2012
Waxahachie, TX (Law Firm Newswire) August 23, 2012 – At least he was honest. A Texas man texted his friend and told him he needed to stop right before he drove into a ravine, suffering severe head trauma that included a broken neck and other fractures.
Fortunately, he survived, and he has since started an organization to help educate the public on the dangers of driving while texting.
“There are so many auto accidents resulting in serious injuries and deaths even without texting,” said Waxahachie personal injury attorney John D. Hale. “Texting while driving exponentially increases the chances of an accident occurring.”
The young man who flipped his truck spent six months in a Texas hospital recuperating and learning how to walk again. He was lucky. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website, in 2010 over 3,000 people in the United States died as a result of distracted driving. Another 416,000 people were injured in distracted driving accidents.
Texting while driving has become a real problem on American roadways. In a recent survey conducted by the American Automobile Association, almost 50 percent of teens admitted to texting while driving. “It’s clear that our multi-tasking culture has impaired our judgment,” said Hale. “This is particularly true of our young motorists. They simply don’t appreciate the risk they pose to themselves and to others.”
