Speedboat Crash Results in Death for Passenger
Sep 26, 2012
Tampa, FL (Law Firm Newswire) September 25, 2012 – A forty-year old man died in a speedboat accident near Crab Island on Saturday afternoon.
He had been riding in a thirty-foot speed boat with three others, when the driver lost control, sending the boat into a spin. The force of the sudden spin launched the four occupants out of the vessel.
“These accidents are tough for everyone involved,” said Tampa personal injury attorney Robert Joyce. “Often, the deaths are all too preventable.” Drivers sometimes forget how difficult speedboats can be to control, and how readily they can eject passengers in a hard spin. Tragedy is all too often the result.
A relaxing, pleasant weekend cruise can turn dangerous, when boaters are not aware of basic water safety. The boat owner’s fiance was driving the high-power vessel, in about thirteen feet of water near channel marker 16, when the accident took place.
There were many other boaters in the area that day to celebrate the Emerald Coast Poker Run. This event is the culmination of a week-long festival of boating, music, and recreation for a charitable cause: raising funds for a youth advocacy foundation.
It is especially tragic that someone lost his life on that day of celebration. Fortunately, eyewitnesses nearby responded quickly to recover the three other ejected passengers from the water. They escaped with minor injuries. An investigation into the exact cause of the accident could take up to eight weeks. The medical examiner’s office will also complete a toxicology report as part of the investigation.
Hopefully, no alcohol was involved, though it certainly has been associated with the party life at the beach, and on the water. More than 150 speedboats were present for the Emerald Coast Poker Run, but the boat involved in the accident was not among those registered for participation in the event.
