White House Mental Health Initiative To Better Support Vets, Hopes Tampa Veterans Attorney
Oct 16, 2012
Tampa, FL (Law Firm Newswire) October 15, 2012 – President Obama stated he is putting more resources toward aid for vets and their families.
The goal of Improving Access to Mental Health Services for Veterans, Service Members, and Military Families, he stated, is to expand mental health support for service members, veterans and family members for treatment for substance abuse, depression and suicide.
The White House issued a statement that making sure that veterans, active service members and their families can and do receive support, and acknowledges that more than two million service members have deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq since September 11, 2001 is important.
“The long deployments for these service people and the intense combat conditions they endure means that they and their families need as much emotional and mental health support as possible,” stated Tampa veterans attorney David W. Magann. “Hopefully, this initiative will begin to address some of the holes in our system, and get our veterans the help they not only need, but that they also deserve.”
As part of the White House initiative, the Department of Defense awarded education grants in the amount of $180 million, earmarked to help support public school districts serving a high number of military families. Additional support is coming for expanded health care services, as well as more education and housing relief resources. Other government coordination is expected to bolster timelier, streamlined mental health services for diagnosed vets and their family members. The goal is to have the VA facilitate contact between the vet and an appropriate therapist, or other health professional within a 24-hour period after initial request, if they feel they are in crisis.
Additional plans call for no fewer than 15 pilot sites to support community-based services, to increase by 50 percent the Veterans Affairs veteran crisis line by the end of 2012, to hire and train 800 peer-to-peer counselors by the end of December, 2013, and to recruit, hire and put some 1,600 mental health professionals in place by the end of June, 2013.
