Hip Implant Recall May Affect Thousands
Apr 19, 2013
Atlanta, GA (Law Firm Newswire) April 18, 2013 – Hip replacement manufacturers have recalled a large amount of all-metal total hip replacement over the years. A high percentage of hip replacement implants have been reported to cause pain and difficulty in motion for the recipients. Some models have been found to create issues in the top of the hip, where the thigh bone fits the socket.
A number of hip replacements shipped between 2004 and 2011 have been recalled. Surgeons and hospitals were notified of recalls after implant registry data revealed that more than 12% of UK-based patients needed to replace their implants within seven years and more than 7 percent of Australian patients needed replacements inside three years.
“Some of the hip replacement manufacturers don’t even seem to know how many of the recalled implants have been used in patients,” commented Atlanta personal injury lawyer James Rice.
In 2010, a specific hip implant model was recalled because of their high-failure rates. That recall led to thousands of U.S. lawsuits which are still in progress. The first of those lawsuits is reaching trial in California.
Some recalls were for incorrect levels of active ingredients, metal or glass shards in the product, and questionable smells. One Hip replacement manufacturers has set aside more than $3 billion to cover the costs of their hip recall. They are also upgrading manufacturing facilities and rebuilding one facility following increased scrutiny from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and estimated sales losses of $1 billion.
Individuals experiencing product liability issues with a surgical implant or anyone affected by a recalled drug or over the counter medication should contact the Atlanta personal injury attorneys of James Rice Law.
