Standard Long-Term Care Coverage Available for Veterans

Apr 6, 2013

White Plains, NY (Law Firm Newswire) April 5, 2013 – Some U.S. vets are not aware of the long-term care offered to them by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

The VA provides a health care benefit plan for military vets. It includes a number of diagnostic services, preventive and treatment services and hospitalization. There is also a variety of long-term care options, if needed. When enrolled in the plan, vets are eligible for:

* Adult day health care, offering both medical and rehabilitation services
* Home care, including nursing and physical therapy in the home
* Geriatric evaluations, either inpatient or outpatient, to evaluate the vet’s ability to live independently
* Respite care, either inpatient or outpatient, to give caregivers a breather
* Hospice or palliative care for terminally ill vets and their families

There are some services which are limited in scope, depending on the vet; not all nursing home care or domiciliary care will automatically be available or provided to all enrolled vets. To qualify for unlimited nursing home care, a vet needs to be:

* In need of nursing home care due to a service-related condition
* Disabled due to a service-connected issue with a rating of 70 or more percent
* Disabled due to a service-connected issue of at least 60 percent and not able to work
* Disabled due to a service-connected disability ruled officially by the VA as aggravated or incurred in the line of duty, while on active duty.

The condition or illness must be officially recognized as related to actions during active military service. Each disability is assessed and assigned a rating. The VA may decide to provide nursing home care to non-disabled vets, depending on space availability, but vets with service-connected disabilities receive nursing home care priority.

The VA also provides state-run nursing homes specifically for vets, providing funds to each state so that they can build nursing homes, and pay for a portion of care costs for each eligible vet.

The VA has a number of domiciliaries for military vets, facilities which provide care for vets who are disabled by disease or old age, and who do not need the skilled nursing services of a nursing home or acute hospitalization.
