Spilman SuperVision™ Helps Region’s Largest Employers Manage New Business Uncertainties
Jul 3, 2013
Charleston, W.Va. (Law Firm Newswire) July 2, 2013 – Spilman Thomas & Battle, PLLC (Spilman) announced that nearly 200 business leaders from the Appalachian region gathered today for the firm’s Regional SuperVision™ symposium, which focused on providing the keys to manage the most problematic human capital issues. This record attendance is likely caused by the “shifting-sand” set of challenges, brought on by ever-changing federal and state laws and regulations, facing businesses today.
“The business climate created by things such as the Affordable Care Act, social media and smartphones is a virtual minefield for today’s companies,” said Eric W. Iskra, chair of Spilman’s labor and employment group. “Our SuperVision symposiums, like this one, are specifically designed to help businesses sidestep potential issues and proactively manage their workforce in an effort to prevent, and, if necessary, defeat employee claims.”
Presentations highlighted many regulatory-driven issues, such as Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act mandates and the U.S. Department of Labor’s recent vigilance in enforcement of wage and hour law. Topics also included social media, telecommuting, employee leaves of absence, deterring union organization, employee performance management, and employee corrective action.
Presentations were specifically geared toward enumerating the best practices of human capital management in each of these areas. Eleven Spilman attorneys joined client representatives from Res-Care, Inc., Debbie’s Staffing Services, Inc., Commercial Insurance of West Virginia, Deem HR, Workplace Solutions, LLC, and E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Company to provide valuable insight on these topics.
A highlight of this year’s Regional SuperVision™ was the lunchtime panel of human resources leaders. The focus of the panel was handling workplace nightmares, and the participants shared the most interesting and troublesome issues they have encountered during their careers.
The popular SuperVision™ event series was launched seven years ago by Spilman’s labor and employment group, which has been nationally recognized for excellence in representation of management in employment disputes. The symposiums are noted for having unique peer-to-peer exchanges and question and answer sessions.
