Michigan Elder Law Attorney Cautions Elderly About Heat Advisories
Aug 17, 2013
Bloomfield Hills, MI (Law Firm Newswire) August 16, 2013 – The ongoing heat wave across the U.S. is proving dangerous for many Michigan residents.
Grand Rapids has already tied for record high temperatures and the summer is not yet over. As high temps and humidity trigger heat advisories, Consumers Energy has been suspending their electric disconnects for customers who are 65 years of age and older out of safety concerns.
“Individuals with heart disease, asthma, or other breathing difficulties may wish to contact the Michigan Department of Human Services to see if they qualify for an air conditioner or fan,” suggested Michigan elder law attorney Christopher Berry. The group Senior Neighbors has offered to provide fans to older adults in need of one. They may also want to check with the National Weather Service to keep track of any heat advisory warnings during the summer months.
Community areas offering respite from the heat include Mel Trotter Ministry, which has been opening the shelter during heat advisories so homeless residents can get out of the heat. Degage’s Life Enrichment Center has been opening during the day, as has Guiding Light Mission Blue Room. It is advisable to call a facility during a heat advisory to see if they will be open prior to venturing out.
“Heat-related illness can be deadly for the very young and the elderly: both groups can have difficultly regulating their body temperature. If someone is experiencing non-life-threatening issues dealing with the heat, they can call 2-1-1 for assistance,” said Berry. Both the American Red Cross and The United Way are monitoring the calls during heat wave occurrences to determine if cooling shelters should be opened to the public.
In July, heat-related illnesses drove patients to seek out assistance at the Muskegon-based Mercy’s Hackley campus and Mercy Health Saint Mary’s. According to the Michigan Department of Community Health, heat-related illness is the top weather-related killer in the U.S. Hundreds of people die each year due to excessive heat, typically when they have a pre-existing condition.
