Three Florida Students Seriously Injured in Car Accident Near School

Tampa, FL (Law Firm Newswire) July 31, 2013 – Three Land O’ Lakes high school students were seriously injured in a car accident near their campus on a recent Friday.
Kyle Hunnewell, Shawn Bosley, and Emilio Batista, all 17-year-old seniors at Sunlake High School, were on their way to school when the accident happened. Hunnewell’s car collided with a van driven by William Ase, 49, of New Port Richey. Ase suffered minor injuries. The three students were all wearing seat belts, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) report.
“This accident could have been much worse,” said Tampa auto accident attorney Robert Joyce. “It is fortunate that the three boys were all wearing seat belts. As an auto accident lawyer, I see crashes like this claim lives all the time.”
The three boys were returning to school in Hunnewell’s black Honda Accord after having lunch off campus. Seniors at Sunlake are permitted to leave campus during lunch hours. Hunnewell was in the eastbound lanes of State Road 54 when he made a left turn into the path of an oncoming maintenance van belonging to the Pasco County school district. The FHP report said that Hunnewell made the turn against a red arrow traffic light. The van struck the car and overturned.
Police said Bosley and Hunnewell were taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital. Hunnewell’s sister, Kristy, 27, told the Tampa Bay Times that they remained in the hospital Friday and were expected to be released Saturday, but Bosley might need surgery. Batista was also seriously injured, but was treated at Tampa General Hospital and released on Friday evening.
Kristy Hunnewell said that all three would miss the prom they planned to attend that weekend, but said she hopes they will recover soon enough to attend their graduation, scheduled two weeks later at the University of South Florida’s Sun Dome.
This is the second serious car accident for Sunlake students in recent weeks. Two weeks earlier, another senior, Kasey Reisinger, 18, was driving on wet pavement on Shady Hills Road when he lost control of his pickup. The truck overturned after crashing through a fence. Reisinger was admitted in guarded condition to Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point.
