Water Sports can be Deadly
Jul 17, 2015
Austin, TX (Law Firm Newswire) July 17, 2015 – Summer is a popular season for spending time outdoors in and on bodies of water, and it is common to see people out on their jet skis or boats. However, these activities may become dangerous, as many watercraft drivers do not have proper training or are under the influence while out on the water.
“Jet skiing can be deadly,” said Austin, T.X. personal injury attorney Bobby Lee, of Lee, Gober & Reyna. “If you do not know how to drive one, have no [or limited] experience handling them or are under the influence when driving one, you are asking for trouble.”
The number of personal watercraft accidents has significantly jumped since the introduction of jet skis in the late 1960s.
In 1998 the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) issued a report revealing the top four reasons cited for personal watercraft accidents:
· Inattention
· Inexperience
· Going too fast for conditions
· Improper lookout
Personal watercraft accidents are the second-largest transportation cause of injury in the U.S. after automobile accidents. The following case points out the dangers of piloting a watercraft without any experience.
A small group of friends spent Easter Sunday on the San Jacinto River in Harris County on what had been intended to be a fun afternoon. Two individuals hopped on one jet ski and were pulling an inner tube behind them with two people on it.
Another member of the group hopped on a second jet ski, but the driver did not know how to operate the craft. The driver got behind the first group and powered up his jet ski to catch up. Just as he was about to come alongside the group, he shut the craft off. “When you shut down a jet ski, it cannot be manoeuvred. Instead it heads in the same direction it was last going when switched off,” said Lee, who is not involved in this case.
The second jet ski was headed straight toward the inner tube. On impact, both tube riders were thrown into the water. One surfaced and sustained no injuries. The other lost his life jacket and drowned.
“It appears there was negligence involved in this case, unless the jet ski sustained a mechanical failure,” Lee added. “However, the second jet ski driver had no training or experience with personal watercraft and failed to follow even common sense safety rules for avoiding collisions on the water.”
For those who have suffered injuries as a result of a jet ski or boating accident, make it an immediate priority to contact a skilled personal injury attorney to find out about obtaining compensation for any injuries sustained.

- Motorcycle Collisions Commonly Occur at Intersections
Motorcycle fatality statistics for Texas show that there were 500 deaths in 2014. There are more than 440,000 mopeds and motorcyclists registered in the Lone Star State, and the number shows every sign of increasing rapidly. The higher the numbers, the more often there are motorcycle accidents involving serious injuries or death. Law enforcement sees far too many motorcycle accidents and knows what causes the vast majority of the collisions — often, drivers simply do not see the bikers. Even if a motorcyclist is driving safely and taking care to watch the road and other drivers, they cannot factor in […] - Possible Distracted Driver Causes Fiery Crash
I-20 and mile marker 156 near Stanton, Texas was the recent scene of a horrific crash that sent one vehicle up in flames. It happened at about 4:00 p.m. According to eyewitness reports and what the police were able to piece together, a pickup truck, heading east on I-20, veered out of the east travel lane, crossed the center median and ran straight into a big rig heading west. The head-on impact instantly killed 32-year-old James Alexander of Abilene and injured the trucker, Alfredo Varela. It was not clear whether Alexander had been driving while distracted, under the influence or […] - Fourth Time DUI in Colorado Now a Felony
Drunk driving is a major concern in all states and many are now moving to make repeat offenders face even stiffer penalties. In Colorado, lawmakers have passed a measure that would create a felony charge for DUI/DWI offenders. House Bill 1043 permits a felony charge to be laid in cases where there is a fourth drunken-driving offense over a lifetime. The first time the bill was run through the legislature, it suggested that the felony charge be laid when there is a third offense. That idea did not garner much support and it languished until Rep. Beth McCann, D-Denver, brought […] - Oklahoma May Have the Right Idea to Ban All E-Device Usage for Drivers
Beginning November 1, it will be illegal to text, post on social media or email while driving in Oklahoma. This ban is extended in Tulsa, where city employees will no longer be able to use any mobile device while on the job and driving. The ban is intended to cover any mobile device, including hands-free models. According to the National Safety Council (NSC), who conducted more than 30 studies on this issue, hands-free phones do not provide any safety benefit while driving. The rationale behind the all-inclusive ban is that all mobile devices are a distraction, as use of any […] - Charges of intoxication manslaughter and driving without a license in an accident in which two children died
