Teens and Senior Drivers Responsible for More Crashes

Miami, FL (Law Firm Newswire) January 12, 2016 – Teenage drivers and senior drivers cause more car accidents than other age groups. According to national crash data, drivers age 16 to 29 are responsible for more collisions than other age groups. The crash rate decreases with age, until the senior years are reached. There is a large increase in the fatal crash rate for the 70 to 74 age group, and the crash rate peaks for drivers age 85 and older.
“Drivers of any age need to take precautions to stay safe on the road,” said Jason Chalik, a Florida car accident attorney with Chalik & Chalik Law Offices. “Inexperienced teenage drivers and senior drivers who may have vision problems are particularly at risk.”
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2013, 17 percent of all traffic fatalities and 10 percent of traffic injuries were senior drivers. The higher crash rate for senior drivers is of particular concern because the number of senior drivers is expected to increase from 36.8 million in 2013 to 83.7 million by 2050.
Vision problems are a primary area of concern regarding senior drivers. In Florida, drivers age 80 or older who wish to renew their driver’s license must pass a vision test. A study found that about 10 percent of drivers from that age group declined to seek renewal of their licenses because they thought they would fail the vision test. Of those who did seek renewal, about 7 percent were denied due to poor vision test results. In Florida, to pass the vision test a person must have 20/40 vision or better.
According to experts, the most common causes of vision loss among seniors are glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration.
