The Most Fatal Pedestrian Accidents Happen in Houston, Says Lee, Gober & Reyna

Austin, TX (Law Firm Newswire) April 15, 2016 – A vehicle hit a Houston man while he was attempting to cross the street at Ormel and the 900 block of Aldine Bender. He died at the scene.

Police have stated they do not think there was any intoxication or other form of impairment involved in the accident, but have further stressed they have more to investigate, including what speed both cars were travelling.

Much like the Lone Star State is not proud of the high number of drunken driving deaths, they are not proud of being listed by the Governors Highway Association (GHSA) as one of the top four states accounting for 41 percent of pedestrian fatalities in the country. Houston is ranked by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) as one of the top five cities in the country for pedestrian deaths.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), pedestrians are 1.5 times more likely to be killed in a car accident than a passenger in a vehicle. Other statistics indicate that every 7 minutes there is a pedestrian injured in an accident with a vehicle.

“Overall, the CDC’s stats revealed that in 2012, 4,743 pedestrians died in traffic accidents, while another 76,000 sustained injuries. On average, that is one crash-related pedestrian death every 2 hours and one pedestrian injury every 7 minutes,” said well-respected Austin personal injury attorney, Bobby Lee.

What accounts for the high rate of pedestrian accidents? Distracted drivers. In fact, according to police statistics, the most often reported driving distraction is texting/talking while behind the wheel. “Hands-free support or not, a distraction is a distraction and just one second of not paying attention can kill,” said Lee.

A 2011 CDC survey also showed that “69 percent of drivers in the United States ages 18-64 reported that they had talked on their cell phone while driving within the 30 days before they were surveyed,” and 31 percent of the same survey sample admitted they sent/read texts/emails while driving.
