Television Director Sentenced to 10 Years’ Probation in Child Pornography Case

Aug 4, 2016

New York, NY(Law Firm Newswire) August 4, 2016 – In a New York child pornography case, a television director has been sentenced to 10 years of probation. Jason Alexander, a former director of Law & Order, also must register in New York as a sex offender.

Alexander, 52, was arrested in Westchester County last summer after authorities said they found digital pornography files on external hard drives and computers in his Dobbs Ferry home. Authorities said the files showed children under the age of 16 engaged in child pornography.

“Child pornography charges are very serious and often require an aggressive defense,” said Peter Brill, a New York criminal defense attorney with Brill Legal Group, who is not involved in the case. “Anyone accused of such a crime should seek out an attorney with experience in child pornography cases.”

In January, Alexander pleaded guilty to a single count of possession of an obscene sexual performance by a child and a single count of promotion of a sexual performance by a child, both felonies. Since the mid-1990s, Alexander has directed dozens of episodes of Law & Order, as well as the film Carry Me Home and episodes of the television program Rescue Me. He and his wife have three children.

The felony charges could have brought a sentence of up to seven years in prison.

“It is important to remember that anyone accused of a crime should not talk to police and should immediately speak with an attorney,” said Brill. “Harsh sentences are not uncommon for child pornography convictions, but with the right defense, prison time can be avoided in many cases.”
