Dump Truck Accident on Florida Interstate Kills Infant and Van Driver

Nov 19, 2019

Tampa, FL (Law Firm Newswire) November 19, 2019 – A 46-year-old man and a two-month-old infant died after sustaining fatal injuries in a multi-vehicle dump truck accident on Interstate 75 in Hillsborough County, Florida. Florida Highway Patrol said the dump truck struck eight other vehicles close to the I-4 exit of the interstate.

The 75-year-old dump truck driver failed to stop for slow traffic and collided with two vehicles before rolling over. The overturned dump truck then continued to skid and crash into five other vehicles. A 46-year-old van driver, died at the scene.

“Heavy trucks, such as dump trucks and semi-trailers, can create dangerous conditions on Florida roads,” commented Robert Joyce, a Tampa personal injury attorney with Joyce & Reyes. “The size and weight of trucks mean there is a higher likelihood that collisions can cause serious injuries and even death. Individuals who are injured in a truck accident should speak to an attorney to find out about the possibility of pursuing compensation from the parties responsible for the accident.”

A two-month old infant was a passenger in one of the first vehicles the dump truck struck. He died from his injuries after being taken to Tampa General Hospital. Another driver and two child passengers received treatment for their injuries.

The deadly truck accident remains under investigation. However, troopers said alcohol was not believed to be a factor. The crash shut down all southbound lanes on I-75 for over four hours.

According to an 8 On Your Side report, the dump truck accident was not the first to occur on I-75 in 2019. Seven people were killed in a semi-truck collision on the interstate earlier this year. After a nearly yearlong study, an I-75 Relief Task Force recommended making several safety improvements to the highway instead of opting for the more expensive option of building a new road.
