MyPhillyLawyer Announces Recipient of 2020 Accident Survivor Scholarship
Jan 24, 2020
Philadelphia, PA (Law Firm Newswire) January 24, 2020 – Philadelphia personal injury law firm, MyPhillyLawyer, selected Asma Khursheed as this year’s recipient of its Accident Survivor Scholarship. Asma, will receive $2,500 toward her tuition at New York University Tandon School of Engineering in Brooklyn, New York. MyPhillyLawyer decided to award the scholarship to her after learning of her perseverence in the aftermath of a construction accident that occurred on September 20, 2017.
“It is truly inspiring that Asma was able to find the inner strength to succeed and focus on helping others after surviving such a devastating and life-altering accident,” said MyPhillyLawyer managing partner Dean Weitzman. “Asma’s refusal to let the accident define her or her path in life is encouragement to others trying to rebuild their lives in the face of similar challenges. The MyPhillyLawyer team is proud to support her pursuit of higher education with this scholarship.”
Asma survived a horrifying construction accident that occurred while she was walking along the streets of Brooklyn. As Asma was walking on the sidewalk she encountered an active construction zone. As is often the case, there was a sign redirecting pedestrians to take an alternate path. As Asma traversed the detour, a piece of wood fell from the construction site above. Asma noticed the falling object just before it struck her, and she was able to shield herself by raising her hands; however, the large piece of wood forcefully collided into her legs.
As a result of the injuries she sustained in the accident, Asma had to spend four months of her sophomore year of college recovering, attending physical therapy sessions, visits to the orthopedic surgeon and countless appointments with her primary care provider. She missed months of classes and, during this time, had to navigate the busy New York subway system with a cane.
In her winning essay, Asma noted that the experience changed the way she looked at construction sites, as well as the laws that protect pedestrians. She notes that there are strong laws that protect motorists, and that there should be a similar set of laws to protect pedestrians. Since the accident, Asma has realized that, in a busy city such as New York, it is not about finding the fastest route, but the safest.
Since learning that her essay was selected, Asma has passed on her heartfelt gratitude to MyPhillyLawyer for their generous scholarship. Asma is currently a Research Assistant at NYU Tandon School of Engineering in Brooklyn, New York.
