Veterans and Gold Star Families Granted Lifetime Free Access to National Parks
Feb 17, 2021
Northville, MI (Law Firm Newswire) February 17, 2021 – Beginning on Veteran’s Day this year, veterans and Gold Star families may enter any federal lands managed by the Department of the Interior for free, including national parks and wildlife refuges.
“It is a treat just to see the natural beauty of this country’s national parks and other federal lands, but enjoying time in nature can have very real health perks too,” said James G. Fausone, lead attorney at Legal Help for Veterans. “Veterans who have post-traumatic stress disorder may benefit from outdoor activities especially. Nature therapy is helpful for reducing symptoms of this and other mental health issues.”
There are more than 2,000 locations and 400 million acres of federal land. In addition to well-known parks like Yellowstone and Mount Rushmore, there are many other sites to enjoy. Hiking, camping, paddling, fishing, hunting, biking and many more activities are all available to enjoy.
In order to enter a qualified park or other area without charge, a veteran must present one of the following forms of identification:
Department of Defense Identification Card
Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC)
Veteran ID Card
Veterans designation on a state-issued U.S. driver’s license or identification card
Gold Star families are the immediate family members of U.S. service members who were killed under certain circumstances, such as during a war, an international terror attack or while serving overseas. These families will be let into the parks based on the honor system; no official identification required.
Active duty military members and their dependents already enjoy free entrance to National Parks and other federal lands. Veterans with a 100 percent VA disability rating also have complimentary park entry.
James G. Fausone is the lead attorney at Legal Help for Veterans, a veteran’s disability claim law firm in Northville, Michigan. As a veteran himself Fausone understands the needs of veterans and is committed to helping the servicemen and women living with injuries and other disabilities from their time in the military.
