Meth Impaired Driver Faces DUI Charges for Teen’s Death in Car Crash

Aug 23, 2019

Tampa, FL (Law Firm Newswire) August 23, 2019 – A 55-year-old driver was arrested nine months after a teenager’s death in a car accident that occurred in Trinity, Florida. He faces multiple charges after police detected the presence of methamphetamines in his system at the time of the crash.

Driver Roy Wiley Rimmer was charged with DUI accident with property damage, DUI accident involving death and vehicular homicide. Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) said he was impaired by methamphetamines when he ran a red light in the April 2018 car accident. A 17-year-old Mitchell High School student was killed in the crash when Rimmer’s 2008 Chevrolet SUV slammed into the driver’s side of her 2009 Honda coupe. The car accident occurred on State Road 54 during afternoon traffic.

“This case is a tragic example of how dangerous it is to drive while under the influence of alcohol or any other substance,” commented Tampa Bay Area personal injury lawyer Robert Joyce of Joyce and Reyes. “Irresponsible behavior behind the wheel can have devastating consequences, causing serious injuries and even death. People who have been hurt in a car accident due to another person’s negligence deserve compensation for their injuries.”

Highway Patrol Sgt. Steven Gaskins said Rimmer was arrested nine months after the accident because authorities were awaiting toxicology results to determine what kind of drugs were in his system at the time of the crash. Rimmer was transported to Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point to receive medical treatment for his injuries. The FHP took his blood sample at the hospital for toxicology tests to determine if he was impaired while driving.

Rimmer was accompanied by two passengers in the vehicle. Troopers said Brandon Casey Windom, 27, fled from the scene of the accident. He was later tracked down at his Tampa home and arrested on felony charges of possession of a controlled substance and tampering with or fabricating evidence. He also faces misdemeanor charges of possession of drug paraphernalia and resisting an officer without violence.
