Texas Leads the Way Nationwide in Vehicle Accident Deaths

Austin, TX (Law Firm Newswire) November 2, 2020 – Texas is leading the nation in vehicle accident deaths. Over the last two decades, roughly 970,000 Texans have died in vehicle accidents. In 2019 the death rate was 1.26 fatalities per one hundred million vehicle miles traveled. Each day, according to the Texas Department of Transportation, ten residents die in auto collisions. The top two causes for car crashes are speeding and DUI. To understand just how high the vehicle accident rate is in Texas, one person is killed every 2 hours and 26 minutes, one person is injured every 2 minutes, 3 seconds and a collision happens every 56 seconds.
Some counties have higher death rates than others. These counties include Harris County, Dallas County and Bexar County. In Harris County, most of the fatal accidents were caused by drunk drivers and driving at night. Harris County route I-45 is not only the deadliest road in the state, but it is on the list of the top ten deadliest roads in the nation.
Densely populated Dallas County had 101 fatalities in 2016 and 315 deaths countywide. San Antonio, located in Bexar County, also has a high fatality rate. In 2016, TxDOT reported 207 deaths countywide, most as a result of DWI.
Some of the most dangerous roadways across Texas include, I-35, I-45, Highway 83 and the Charles W. Anderson Loop. Interstate 35 stretches for 400 miles. Between 2010 and 2016 there were 590 fatal accidents on it. Highway 83, which runs in McAllen and the Rio Grande Valley had 164 fatal collisions between 2010 and 2016. The Charles W. Anderson Loop which circles San Antonio saw at least 204 crashes.
The most common causes of accidents in Texas are speeding, DWI/DUI and distracted driving. Speeding caused 17,000 wrecks in 2015, resulting in 398 deaths and 3,300 injuries. DWI/DUI was cited as causing 34 percent of all fatalities in Texas in 2010 and 25.7 percent in 2018. Texting while driving caused over 105,000 crashes in 2015. That year over 2,500 of the distracted driving collisions resulted in 422 deaths and injuries.
