Veterans Disability Attorney Applauds New Caregivers Program

Northville, MI (Law Firm Newswire) October 3, 2011 – Post-9/11 veterans that are dealing with extensive injuries and have a caregiver assist them can now designate their caregiver to be a part of the VA Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers. For many soldiers that returned home with traumatic brain injuries, other severe injuries or are amputees, this program can give much-needed relief for the costs of daily care.
“Many spouses or family become the primary caregiver for the wounded veteran,” said Veterans disability lawyer Jim Fausone. “These individuals oftentimes quit their jobs or put other parts of their life on hold to take care of the veteran.”
The VA program started in the summer and is for veterans who are unable to perform one or more daily functions and need this type of around-the-clock care. The program gives a monthly caregiver stipend based on need and access to health insurance if not already utilized. If a veteran needs their caregiver to accompany them to a special, remote facility, the program will pay specific per diem travel expenses. Additional services include caregiver training, respite care, and mental health counseling.
“The program is a first for the VA and looks to give caregivers a sufficient stipend based on what a home healthcare aide would charge in their area,” said Fausone.
Veterans can apply for VA health services and complete the new Caregiver Application, VA Form 1010-CG, to have their application reviewed. One primary caregiver and two secondary caregivers may be designated. The VA will visit the veteran’s home in the process to verify that the veteran and caregiver have all they need to make the home setting accessible and safe for the wounded soldier.
“Veterans and their caregivers deserve to receive these benefits,” said Fausone. “We are here to help make sure the application is filled out thoroughly and your rights to receive the stipend are upheld.”
