Veterans with PTSD Now Have a Mobile App
Aug 22, 2012
Northville, MI (Law Firm Newswire) August 21, 2012 – Mobile technology is now available to help veterans assess their post traumatic stress disorder symptoms.
“The military has designed a new mobile application, specifically for veterans diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD),” said James Fausone, veteran’s disability lawyer with Legal Help for Veterans. “The application is available on Android and Apple devices. However, it is only recommended for use when a veteran is receiving professional prolonged exposure therapy.”
Since the app, called the PE Coach, was introduced, it has been downloaded more than 2,000 times. Another application, the PTSD Coach, has been downloaded more than 66,000 times since 2011, an indication that veterans are finding the mobile applications useful.
This latest technology, developed by the Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs, is offering their new program, PE Coach, to service personnel and veterans suffering from PTSD. It allows them to assess their symptoms, get reminders sent to them about homework or appointments and record therapy sessions. It also serves as a tool for the veteran to learn more about PTSD and how to cope with it.
One particular type of therapy used with veterans focuses on approaching situations they avoid because they are deemed “unsafe” or are related to the trauma that resulted in PTSD. An example may be the veteran avoids traffic jams or overcrowded public places. Treatment revisits the traumatic memory, in the presence of medical assistance, to allow the vet to handle the feelings that manifest when the memory is brought to life again.
“Part of a veteran’s therapy is to record every session they attend, and then listen to it daily, in order to help them cope with the fear they face when dealing with their memories. Patients get a CD of their session and homework to help them process what was learned. They may receive assignments that include facing high stress, high-anxiety situations,” explained Fausone.
With the mobile application in hand, veterans have an instant method to record their thoughts, reactions and responses, convenient therapy that assists a veteran with coping techniques on a daily basis. With more and more applications such as this being developed, veterans have greater access to cutting edge technology to help them when they return home.
