Head of Senate Vows Increased Focus on Immigration
Dec 4, 2012
Houston, TX (Law Firm Newswire) December 3, 2012 – At least one Republican is talking about doing something to help immigrants, in the short term.
Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, the leader of the US Senate, recently remarked that he is putting a top priority on immigration reform. In fact, he stated that he would chase Republican votes on immigration, including Senator John McCain of Arizona. McCain had supported reform measures earlier, but toughened his stance in the face of backlash from conservatives.
Senator Marco Rubio (R-Florida), has floated his own proposal to grant temporary visas for undocumented immigrants, and recently said that he plans to work toward “upward mobility” for “people who work hard and play by the rules.” Rubio has also said that he feels the conservative movement is suited to minorities and immigrants, and that Republicans need to better articulate their beliefs to those groups. Surveys conducted during, and directly after the November 2012 presidential election, found that Democrat Obama had more than two-thirds of U.S. Hispanic votes, which pundits believe helped position him to win.
“It is time for the government to make a definitive move toward immigration reform,” agreed Annie Banerjee, a Houston immigration lawyer. “This administration has the backing of a large number of people for whom sensible immigration reform is a high priority.”
The Senate has so far failed to pass the DREAM Act, a bill which is backed by Reid, as well as newly re-elected U.S. President Barack Obama. The DREAM Act would allow a system to ensure permanent residency to a portion of the more than 11 million undocumented residents of the U.S.
In August of 2012, President Obama stated that there would be no blanket deportation of immigrants bought to the U.S. by their parents when they were minors, if they were in good standing as citizens, as current students, recent high school grads, or military veterans. Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney had stated during his campaign that he would do what he could to jettison the DREAM Act and take a tough line on immigration.
