Florida Immigration Attorney Larry Rifkin: Immigration Reform Needs to Be About People, Not Politics

Miami, FL (Law Firm Newswire) November 20, 2014 – Depending on the political party one listens to, immigration reform is an excellent or terrible plan.
But no one is asking the immigrants waiting for reform.
“Statistics have been released that show tens of thousands of unaccompanied children crossing the border to find their families. President Obama indicated his intention to use executive action to spur reform, but he eventually backed away from signing such an order,” outlined Larry Rifkin, a Miami immigration attorney.
Whenever an American president indicates an intention to use executive powers, the potential ramifications may develop into untold implications. Immigration reform would be no different.
Executive action may actually have backfired, drawing a line in the sand and solidifying each party’s stance on immigration reform without compromise.
Currently, the U.S. immigration situation is completely unsustainable. Over 12 million illegal immigrants live in the United States. Within the last four years, more than a half million people crossed the border illegally. Within the past year, more than 52,000 unaccompanied children have been apprehended crossing the border. Another 90,000 are expected to arrive by the end of the year. Those figures are expected to double in 2015.
“Immigration policy has turned into an extremely serious humanitarian crisis. Immigrants are seeking security and safety in the United States. Drugs wars and crime bring cascades of immigrants from Mexico and Central America,” added Rifkin.
The current government policy is reactive, not proactive. Debating immigration reform ad infinitum hardly makes sense when millions of people are in limbo. Immigration reform needs to be about the people, not the politics.
